Hristo Stoitchkov, one of the stars of the 1994 World Cup, scored his first goal of the season to lift D.C. United into a 1-1 tie in the match with the New England Revolution.
Brian Kamler from the New England Revolution opened the score in the 24th minute. Galin Ivanov, Bulgarian United defender, fired a pass to fellow Bulgarian Stoitchkov in the 31st minute and Stoitchkov hit the equalizer into the back of the net.
The goal came a week after he made his first league start for United, sparking a 3-0 victory over Columbus with 69 quality minutes. The club plans to drop him from the active roster if it adds another international forward, but for now, Stoitchkov will remain in the starting lineup, the Washington Post commented.
We've had ties we truly deserved to win, Coach Ray Hudson said, as cited by the Washington Times. I personally felt a little relief that we got a point [in the MLS Eastern Conference standings]. We didn't play well enough overall to win the game, he added.
