Old Bridge Renovated over Nuke Safety Concerns

Politics | June 23, 2003, Monday // 00:00

A crumbling bridge at a junction leading to Bulgaria's only Nuclear Power Plant Kozloduy is being renovated. The works started after years of ignored alerts about the poor condition of the bridge as funding have been scarce.

The bridge was built seventy-two years ago and does not meet modern security requirements. This route has been often used to transport special shipments to the nuke plant. This junction has been also included in the national plan to evacuate the population of the 30-kilomiter zone arround the plant in case of nuclear disaster.

Bulgaria's Executive Road Agency released the first tranche of BGN 30,000 to reinforce the bridge. The nuke plant has also backed the project pledging BGN 2 million.
