Sofia Upbeat on Iraq Debt

Politics | June 23, 2003, Monday // 00:00

We are expecting to get the money back as soon as Iraq starts to pay its debts, Foreign Minister Passy, who is currently on a visit to London, said in an interview for CNN.

Asked about the motives for Bulgaria's strong support for the military coalition during the war in Iraq, Minister Passy pointed as top reason the need of democracy in the region.

I spent thirty years in a totalitarian regime and we don't want this to happen to our neighbours, the minister said.

He underlined that Bulgaria plays a new role in the Balkans, in the world and the Security Council, which has resulted in a "tourist invasion".

The Bulgarian economy is improving, Minister Passy told CNN, pointing to 4,8% of economic growth for last year, drop in unemployment by nearly 5%, inflation of 0,5% and stable currency rate.
