German Retail Groups Step on Bulgarian Market

Kaufland is one of three German retail groups that plan to step on the Bulgarian market, rivalling Billa and Metro hypermarkets, which have already gained good positions in the country.

Kaufland has bought a site and is to start the construction of a hypermarket in the town of Haskovo till up to two months. The Kaufland hypermarket is expected to create 120 new jobs.

Negotiations are currently being held with the mayors of another two Bulgarian towns - Pleven, 180 kilometers northeast, and Shumen, 350 kilometers east of Sofia.

Metro was the first retail group chain to step on the Bulgarian market. It has seven outlets now - two in Sofia, and one in each Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Russe and the Black Sea coastal cities of Varna and Burgas.
