Bulgaria's army needs over USD 5 B to be equipped according to NATO's requirements. This became clear at the international two-day conference "Bulgaria Joining NATO: Trade and Investment Opportunities" that started in Sofia Monday.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolay Svinarov expects the country to contract US companies under army modernization projects. Such a commission for a US firm to land is the revamp of the country's coastal patrols, he said at the forum. In addition, a contract for the upgrade of Bulgaria's helicopter fleet will be signed this fall, the minister pointed out.

The forum was attended by reps dispatched by three of the largest US companies working in this field - Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and BAI Systems & Engineering.
