Bulgaria's exports of fruits have decline by 13% in 2002 over the previous year, totalling 6 465 tonnes, data of the Agriculture Ministry shows.

Locally-produced frozen fruits, strawberries, cherries, raspberries are in brisk demand on the foreign markets.

Imports of fruits register the opposite trend, marking a 7%-increase in 2002 over the previous year and towering to 135 117 tonnes.

Citric fruits take up the bigger share of Bulgaria's fruits imports (55%), followed by apples, peaches and pears (32%), melons and watermelons (8%).

During periods of huge production the Bulgarian state introduces higher customs duties for certain fruits and vegetables in a bid to protect local producers.
