Bulgaria's Birth Rate Halved Since 1989

Bulgaria's population gets reduced by 50,000 people each year due to the high mortality rate, a report about Bulgaria's youth, adopted by the government says.

Birth rate has halved in 2002 over 1989.

Some 195,000 Bulgarians have left the country for the last eight years, with most of the emigrants being young people

According to the survey of Ivan Handzhijski Institute and the department for social surveys with the United Nations over 400,000 Bulgarians have declared they want to leave the country. Over one third of them are aged between 20 and 29.
