The Sofia District Court acquitted taxi driver Petyo Petkov accused of attacking with acid the late Svetlana Gebreva, Director of the State Construction Control. The failed prosecution had sought twelve-year sentence behind bars.

Gebreva's face was burned with sulphur acid in front of her office in the morning of December 17, 2001. She died on May 14, 2002 at the age of 36. The medical expertise ordered by the court proved the assault did not cause the lethal outcome as she died of cancer.

Petyo Petkov was also suspected to have attacked journalist Anna Zarkova in a similar way some five years ago.
