The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) ends Friday an inspection of Bulgaria's only Nuclear Power Plant Kozloduy units 3 and 4, carried out at the request of the plant management to check the units' safety.

The government has agreed to close the two 440-megawatt units by 2006 under pressure from the European Union.

The inspection will be complete at the end of the working day, when a meeting will be held for all eighteen experts from WANO offices in Moscow, Atlanta, Paris, and Tokyo to share their views and opinions.

The results of the inspection will be compiled in a report to be accessed by the plant management only. The plant management hopes that the check would confirm the units may be safely operated by the end of the lifespans - 2010 and 2012 respectively.

The first of the two oldest units at Kozloduy nuclear power station, 200 kilometres north of Sofia, was decoupled from Bulgaria's energy grid at 8 p.m. on December 31. The closure of Unit 2 started at midnight December 30.

The closure of the two oldest units came after many years of concern over their safety, strong pressure from the European Union, protests from the nuclear lobby and opposition parties that the reactors are economically necessary.
