The Most Popular Casino Games to Play
A growing number of people enjoy playing online casino games.
In terms of famous casino games, few can stand up to Roulette. This classic table game has been a staple of casinos for centuries, even without the use of playing cards or dice.
At its core, its quite a straightforward game but there are a few things that players should understand before joining a table for a game of classic Roulette or Quantum Roulette. So, let’s explore how the game of Roulette works and what sets different varieties of the game apart.
Roulette 101
Any game of Roulette centres around the spinning wheel and a ball. The croupier will spin the wheel and then release the ball in the opposite direction of the spin. Once the ball loses momentum it will eventually come to a stop in one of the numbered pockets around the edge of the wheel.
The wheel’s design features an alternating pattern of red and black pockets covering almost all of its numbers, with a green zero pocket. At the start of the game, players placed wagers on where the ball will ultimately land.
Wagers in Roulette are split into two categories – inside and outside bets. These are shown on the table layout, with inside bets covering single numbers or small groups of them and outside bets covering larger groups or categories such as odd/even.
When the ball lands the croupier will announce the result and resolve all wagers, with different inside and outside bets having different odds attached to them.
Variations of Roulette
Thanks to the rise of online casino platforms there are now a wider range of Roulette games to choose from than ever. At a glance it may not be obvious what the differences between these varieties are, so let’s lay out a few of the major formats players may encounter.
European Roulette – featuring 37 pockets and a single zero pocket, this variety is the most common format. Its house edge sits at around 2.7%.
American Roulette – this format features an extra pocket compared to European Roulette – a green double zero. This raises the house edge to 5.26%, as the ball now has a higher chance of landing in a green pocket.
French Roulette – almost the same as European Roulette, the French variety adds some rules that come into play if the ball lands on green. The la partage and en prison rules mean that the house edge can sit as low as 1.35% on even-money bets (like red/black or high/low).
These are the three major varieties of Roulette, which almost all other online formats are likely to use as their basis.
Types of Roulette wagers
We mentioned inside and outside bets earlier, but now let’s go into a bit more detail about the types of wagers available in Roulette games.
The table layout shows the various options that players can choose from, with inside bets located in the three central columns of numbers and outside bets sitting around them. In a land-based Roulette game, players place their counters on specific squares or positions on the layout to show their chosen wager.
Inside bets are made up of wagers like straight up (placed on a single number), split (placed on two adjacent numbers) or corner (placed on four numbers making up a square on the layout).
