BRITISH AIRCRAFT HARDLY RECEIVED AIR SPACE ACCESS

Politics | September 27, 2001, Thursday // 00:00

British transporting military airplane flew more than an hour over the Northern Bulgarian frontier. The Sofia Airport Directory for Air Control did not grant access to the Bulgarian air space to the airplane because it did not have permit for that. At 11.34, the pilot of C-130 `Hercules` asked for corridor through the Bulgarian air space. He refused to announce what is the airplane cargo. The pilot notified the airport that it comes from the Czech Republic and goes to a NATO base in Turkey. The flight was reported to be a part of the anti terrorist operation of the United States. Meanwhile, the British Embassy in Bulgaria managed to arrange an air corridor with the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry. C-130 passed over Bulgaria in Turkish direction at 17.30. The Foreign Ministry refused to comment on the issue.
