Bulgaria's Education Minister: Obligatory Matriculations are Still Necessary

Obligatory matriculations for high-school leavers would increase their chances to enter college, Bulgaria's Education Minister Vladimir Atanassov insisted Friday.
Bulgarian students, who graduate in 2003, will choose whether to sit for obligatory matriculation exams or not. The move was prompted by the tough requirements of the legislative acts. Recently the Supreme Administrative Court ruled against the obligatory exams for graduates, who entered language schools during 1998/199 school year. students.
This year's optional examinations are а decision of compromise, Atanassov said. The Minister has many times underlined that all students have the right to graduate from institutions of higher education and universities under similar conditions, regardless of the curriculum of the school they go to.
