Stripping Bulgarian Right-wing MP of Immunity Voted Down

Politics | May 22, 2003, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgarian Parliament voted down a motion for stripping right-wing MP Nikola Nukolov of immunity.

At the beginning of January Chief Prosecutor Nikola Filchev demanded the immunity of MP Nikola Nikolov stripped so that a lawsuit can be brought against him. In his request to the Parliament, the prosecutor said that Nikolov should be pursued for a string of crimes. Nikolov is a member of the rightist opposition party Union of Democratic Forces and was the chair of the economy parliamentary committee during the rule of Bulgaria's previous government.

An ad hoc parliamentary committee investigated the documents of the prosecutor's office for about four months before concluding that there are no grounds for stripping the right-wing lawmaker of immunity.

Following the vote, Nikola Nikolov said that the Chief Prosecutor has been misled.
