Brazilian authorities announced that Bulgarian sailor Todor Petrov did not die of SARS after they imposed quarantine on his ship on Thursday over his death.

The tests that have been carried out so far indicate that the cause of death is not SARS, a health care official in the northeastern Brazilian state Alagoas said.

On Friday, the state's sanitary control service is to lift the quarantine on the Cyprus-flagged ship on which Petrov sailed.

Bulgaria's embassy in Brazil was said to investigate the case.

48-year old Todor Petrov died on Wednesday after he boarded the ship at a Brasilian port on April 26. He arrived in the Latin American country a day earlier by a plane from Zurich which he boarded after a flight from Bulgarian capital Sofia.
