Bulgarian SARS Patient Discharged from Hospital

The Bulgarian patient that was hospitalized with SARS symptoms in Sofia was discharged on Wednesday, hospital officials said.

According to Dr. Kostadin Kostov, director of the hospital for infectious diseases where the 32-year old man received treatment, his condition was good and a special commission of specialist decided he could go home.

The patient will be further watched by a general practitioner and Sofia's hygiene and epidemic control institute.

According to Dr. Kostov, Bulgaria dispatched blood samples from the patient to Germany Wednesday morning so that precise testing could determine whether he got SARS.

The director of the hospital said he was almost certain that the infected man suffered pneumonia different than SARS. Dr. Kostov also pointed out that nonetheless the tests in Germany might be inconclusive.

The patient arrived from SARS-hit Toronto on April 16 after a one-month stay. He came down with the symptoms on the third day following his arrival in Bulgaria.
