Bulgaria, Turkey to "Renew" Energy Agreement

Business | April 29, 2003, Tuesday // 00:00

The energy agreement between Bulgaria and Turkey may be renewed, said Bulgarian Energy Minister Milko Kovachev April 29.

Late on April 21 Turkish Electricity Trade and Contracting Inc. TETAS notified the Bulgarian Electricity Transmission Company that it stops the power import from Bulgaria.

Minister Milko Kovachev is positive that regardless of the suspended electricity exports to Turkey, there will be no hikes in electricity prices in Bulgaria.

An eventual compensation for Bulgarian power export to Turkey could be the Greek market, another opportunity could be an eventual deal with Macedonia.

Minister Kovachev explained that the meeting date with his Turkish counterpart is still to be fixed.

Compensations for suspended Bulgarian power supply were on the agenda of a conference on Southeastern Europe and energy which was opened in Sofia April 29.
