PRIME MINISTER ATTENDED AUBG 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The Bulgarian Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg visited Blagoevgrad to attend the 10th anniversary celebration of the American University in Bulgaria. The ceremony started with one minute silence in memory of the innocent victims in the United States. `Dear students, in this new era, you create the image of our country. Stay in Bulgaria where your home, friends and relatives are,` the Prime Minister said in his speech addressed to the AUBG students. He wished to the students health, happiness and optimism and invited them to apply for positions in the state administration. He said that modern education is a priority of Bulgaria. He described the AUBG as an authority among the higher education institutions in Southeastern Europe and as an example of a modern university. Richard Miles, US ambassador to Bulgaria and the British and Croatian ambassadors also attended the celebrations. In her address, the University`s President Dr. Julia Watkins expressed special gratitude to former Bulgarian president Dr. Zhelyu Zhelev, who was one of the initiators to open the American University in Bulgaria in 1991. She noted that the University in Blagoevgrad continues to develop with the help of the American government, USAID, Open Society Institute, Soros Foundation and a number of other Bulgarian and foreign institutions. The autumn meeting of the University`s Board of Trustees was without quorum. Many of the members of the Board could not come because of the tragic events in the States. `At least 14 members should be present to vote important decisions.` Her Highness Marie Louise, sister of the Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg and AUBG Board`s member said. The Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg visited Kyustendil earlier during the day. He discussed with the Regional Governor Lyudmil Stanev the development and the problems of the region. Saxe-Coburg visited the art gallery ` Vladimir Dimitrov – the Master.` Afterwards he went to the Kyustendil cathedral and there he planted an ever green tree, wishing all the best to the citizens of Kyustendil. Later the Bulgarian Prime Minister attended the opening ceremony of the Orthodox Chapel ` St.St. Petur and Pavel.`
