New civilian casualties, a plan to accelerate Ukraine's accession to the EU, expelled human rights organizations: read the highlights of the war in Ukraine over the past 24 hours.

52 victims in a railway station attack

At least 50 people, including five children, were killed in a rocket attack on a railway station in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. The station was full of civilians waiting to be evacuated, Donetsk Governor Pavlo Kirilenko said. After the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described Russia as an “evil without borders.” US President Joe Biden has accused Russia of being behind the attack, calling the incident a “horrific atrocity”, and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian described it as a “crime against humanity”. Russia's Defense Ministry has accused Kyiv of carrying out the attack and accused the Ukrainian army of “using refugees as a ‘human shield’ to defend the positions of Ukraine's armed forces.”

Evacuation from the eastern parts

The attack came as civilians in eastern Ukraine struggled to evacuate after authorities called on them to leave their homes at the “last chance” to avoid a major Russian offensive expected in the Donbas region. Russia has redeployed its troops to the east and south, seeking to establish a land link between occupied Crimea and Moscow-backed separatist states of Donetsk and Luhansk in Donbas.

EU chief warns of Russia's “disintegration”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia would “fall into economic, financial and technological decline as Ukraine moves towards a European future”. Von der Leyen met with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky after visiting a mass grave in Bucha, where Russian forces have been accused by Ukraine's allies of committing atrocities against civilians. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer also left for Kyiv, becoming one of the first EU leaders to visit Ukraine after photos of corpses in Bucha came to light.

Borodyanka is “terrifying”

The devastation left by Russian troops in the town of Borodyanka near Kyiv is “much more appalling” than the situation in the nearby town of Bucha, President Zelensky said. The Prosecutor General of Ukraine announced that 26 bodies were found under two destroyed residential buildings.

Curfew in Odessa

The southern Ukrainian city of Odessa has imposed a curfew from Saturday night to Monday night over a “threat of a missile strike” from Russia and after the shelling of Kramatorsk train station.

Russia revoked the work permits of human rights organizations

Russia has said it is closing the local offices of a number of international organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The organizations are excluded from the Russian register of international organizations and foreign non-governmental organizations due to “violations of the current legislation of the Russian Federation,” the Ministry of Justice said.

Britain sanctions Putin's daughters

Britain has announced sanctions against the daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. London is sending more “high-quality military equipment” to Ukraine, including Starstreak anti-aircraft missiles and 800 anti-tank missiles.

Turkey hopes for peace talks

Russia and Ukraine are ready to continue negotiations, although images of bodies found in Bucha have slowed the process, said a Turkish representative mediating the talks. There are “some pending issues”, including the status of the Donbas and Crimea regions, as well as security guarantees, according to the official, who said there was no set date for the next round of talks.

Russian inflation is rising

Inflation in Russia reached 16.7% on an annual basis in March, according to the state statistical agency Rosstat. This is a level not seen since 2015, and food prices have risen by 19.5%, making low-income people unable to buy food.
