I Will Not Be Held Ransom to Your National Carrier

Letters to the Editor | April 4, 2003, Friday // 00:00

Dear Sir,

I have a house in the Varna region of your wonderful country, I visited your country on holiday and fell in love with its natural beauty as well as its friendly people many of whom I now class as my friends. I have spread the word to my friends, three of whom have also purchased property in your country. The point of my letter is this I have just tried to book a flight to Varna with Balkan air for a three week stay, only to be told that there would be a Ј90 per person surcharge for the extra week, this extra cost I can see no reason for. I would like to submit that, whilst the carrier may gain in the short term, the tourist trade in Bulgaria will not; from England Bulgaria is already one of the most expensive places to get to. If the partly state owned air line continues with this policy, it will cost the local businesses dearly as many other potential buyers will be put off looking at Bulgaria for a second home. I and my 3 friends have spent well over Ј200,000 buying and having property renovated all of which has given work and wages to your countrymen. There is also the money spent in furnishing our properties, the cars, the restaurants, and the local shops that we patronise all gain.

I would suggest that, like most other air lines, Balkan air introduce a frequent flier discount for regular visitors to encourage those that have or are considering the purchase of a second home in Bulgaria a more attractive proposition. I personally flew to Bulgaria five times in 2002 and have just booked my second two week holiday this week, I would have spent three weeks but I will not be held to ransom by your National Carrier.

Yours sincerely

V Pocock
