PEACEFUL STAR 2001 EXERCISES BEGAN IN ISTANBUL

Peaceful Start-2001 manoeuvre, which was planned to create a common understanding with Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries and preserve peace, started in Istanbul on September 19. The manoeuvre is being supervised by West Garrison Commander Ergin Saygun. Saygun, who spoke at a ceremony during which the national anthems of the participating countries were played, said that Partnership for Peace was among NATO`s tasks. He stated that the experiences of PfP countries should be collected in one pool like it happened in the Bosnia-Hercegovina. Saygun said that they also planned a series of social activities which aimed to promote the Turkish culture to the participating countries. The manoeuvre, which will be computer supported, is being participated by Turkey, Albania, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia and Romania, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are attending as observers. A total of 110 personnel, including 47 Turks, are participating in Peaceful Star-2001. The manoeuvre will last until September 22.
