UN Extends Oil-for-Food Program in Iraq

The UN Security Council has decided to extend Iraq's oil-for-food programme for another 45 days.

It authorised UN chief Kofi Annan to reactivate its administration and deliveries once conditions allow.

The scheme, imposed on Iraq after the Gulf war of 1991, draws on billions of dollars of Iraqi oil revenues to purchase food and medicines. Some 60 percent of Iraq's 26 million people were dependent on it, Deutsche Welle reported
