Sofia Confirms Iraqi Diplomats Won't Be Expelled

Politics | March 28, 2003, Friday // 00:00

Bulgaria confirmed Friday that it will not comply with the US request to expel Iraqi diplomats on its soil.

The spokesman of the foreign ministry declared that "for the moment the ministry did not have information on the grounds of which diplomats from the Iraqi mission in Sofia could be announced for "persona non grata.""

This announcement came a day after Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg said in Tirana that there was no reason to ask the Iraqi diplomats leave Bulgaria. He added then that each country should "decide for itself" how to respond to the Washington request.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador James Pardew said that his country accepted the decision of the Bulgarian government.
