The Parliamentary Group BSP for Bulgaria today tabled a proposal for a freeze on MPs' salaries and the cancellation of the proposal adopted yesterday to set additional remuneration of up to 25%. This was announced at a briefing by Vice-President of the National Assembly from the quota of the left wing Christian Vigenin.
However, the decision proposed by Democratic Bulgaria was not for a new opportunity to raise their pay, but for a salary ceiling, which according to the parliamentary rules of procedure can be paid for national priority tasks. So far, there has been such an opportunity, but without a specified amount of bonuses.
Vigenin stressed that the Lefts have not supported this decision and with this statement they want to put an end to speculation on the subject.
"We don't see what extra pay MPs should have for doing their job," he was adamant.
However, the co-chair of Democratic Bulgaria Hristo Ivanov countered: "This is speculation, an ugly lie, on the contrary - colleagues have suggested that this text should include a limit of up to 25%, because at the moment it can mean any amount. It's an effort to limit the amount of extra pay, not "Wow, scandal! They've voted more money for themselves.' We will propose to drop this text on MPs" remuneration."
"There is no change after the latest amendments that were adopted yesterday in the remuneration of the Members of the National Assembly. It is an absolute lie that the MPs salaries are rising by 25%", commented MRF MP Dr. Hassan Ademov.
He explained that in Art. 7, para. 2 of the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly states that MPs may receive additional remuneration when performing national priority tasks.
Christian Vigenin further said that BSP will also want to skip the text, which currently exists in the rules, which provides for updating the salaries of MPs every three months.
For the fourth time in a row the party proposes to freeze MPs' salaries at the level of the 44th Parliament basic pay for the last month of their work.
Earlier today, while announcing that GERB would return the mandate for the formation of a government, the outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borissov commented that the decision taken yesterday was a vicious practice: "I saw that one of the first decisions of the new MPs was to raise their salary to BGN 10,000...".
However, the base salary of MPs in March was BGN 4,884. The base pay will be determined on the basis of the average remuneration in the country per quarter. This means that 25% of the base salary is BGN 1,221 which means a total of BGN 6,105 a month.
