Bulgaria: Head of Bulgarian Coronavirus Task Force: It’s Too Early to Relax, Pandemic Is Far from Over

Our vigilance should not be lulled despite positive trends. On a 2-week basis, we have a decrease in morbidity of about 40%. on a week-on-week basis we have about 25% reduction. That's what Major General Prof. Ventsislav Mutafchiiski said at a briefing on the national coronavirus task force (NOHQ).

There really is a steep decline, but it will not be endless, and most likely it will persist until next week. The death toll per 100,000 has peaked and is now 26 per 100,000, he said.

In his words, high bed occupancy rate in intensive wards is extremely worrying.

When I said “next week”, I meant that if the morbidity rate drops now, then next week we will face its rise with overburdened hospitals. Last time, we had a reserve of beds of more than 80%, according to data released by Prof. Angelov, said Gen. Mutafchiiski.

With a view to the coming Easter holidays, vigilance should be stepped up. The pandemic is not over. You know that in the summer season the pandemic was developing at very worrisome pace, so I see no reason to relax just because summer is coming, he said.

Last summer, you remember we scored record high climb in Covid-19 cases. Our hope for overcoming the disease lies in the vaccination, which is undeniable, added Gen. Mutafchiiski.

China and Vietnam have prevented the spread of Covid-19 in their countries, and perhaps this is the right tactic and I think so to this day. Either way, this is a missed opportunity and we need to look for new opportunities, and these are undoubtedly the vaccines, he assured.

He alsosaid: "There were only four Covid fatalities in England the other day and we had over 200. They have dozens of millions vaccinated. There are no newly infected and no new deaths in Israel. I think that's a strong enough argument for the benefit of vaccination. They set an incredible example to the world."

I wish everyone happy holidays, but let us be responsible. Let's not forget about the danger hovering over our heads, concluded Gen. Mutafchiiski.
