Bulgaria: Bulgaria’s President Addressed Nation: Think, Choose, Vote!

Those who do not go to the polls will leave the fate of our Motherland, the fate of their loved ones and their own fate to the arbitrariness of the choice of others, Bulgaria’s President said in a televised address to the people on April 1.

He called upon all adult Bulgarians: “Think, choose, vote. Everything is up to us on Sunday."

To whom should we entrust our future is the question that should determine our choice. "Those whom we trust to manage the public purse will be able to spend the funds on either protecting or, on the contrary, limiting our freedom. They will largely determine whether we can hear the truth on the public media, whether we can count on prompt and real justice, and whether the government will lend us a hand when we need it," the President said. He noted that it is up to Bulgarian voters to determine whether their children choose to stay in Bulgaria, or move abroad in their pursuit of happiness and whether their grandchildren speak to them in Bulgarian.

A term marked by scandals, revelations, protests and an economic crisis is coming to an end. Confidence in the old National Assembly has long ago collapsed. Thousands of Bulgarians demanded early elections last summer. They were refused with the argument that elections should not be held in the middle of the pandemic, the President said.

The time has come for regular elections, but as we can see, the pandemic is still here and it is unclear for how long. The crisis has deepened in recent months. Bulgaria has lost doctors, nurses, teachers, many of us have lost loved ones not only because of the coronavirus, but also because of the blocked access to health care. Mortality is at record high levels, but fear is not the way out. Procrastination is not a solution. It's time to draw the line. It is time for new ideas, new people and new trust in institutions.

Much has been done over the years to push Bulgarians away from politics. This is convenient for the enemies of freedom. Hundreds of thousands of compatriots abroad will again be unable to vote for the future of Bulgaria, to which many long to return. But whatever disappointments we have experienced, once every four years we have the right to decide on our future. On election day, each of us, young or old, rich or poor, has an equal share in the fate of Bulgaria and should voice it in a well thought, critical and conscious manner. Those who do not go to the polls will leave the fate of our Motherland, the fate of their loved ones and their own fate to the arbitrariness of the choice of others. They will leave it to controlled and purchased votes, which has been a sad fact for years, he remarked.

"Therefore," he said, "I call upon all of you adult Bulgarians: think, choose, vote. Everything is up to us on Sunday."
