Bulgaria: Bulgarian Emergency Medics Lash out at Government over Untimely Loosening Anti-Epidemic Measures

After the government announced a loosening of the anti-epidemic measures while our country reached an absolute record in the number of people infected with coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic, emergency medics came out with sharp criticism of the government. They demanded the immediate cancelation of the order of Health Minister Kostadin Angelov because they believe it renders meaningless their work and poses a risk for those saving the lives of patients.

"One day before the loosening of anti-epidemic measures the Ministry of Health reported in one day 5,176 newly infected - an increase by 679 people ,155 died, 9,811 are hospitalized. All these indicators point again to the growth in diseased and complicated patients, which we need to diagnose, treat, transport and hospitalize.

The more infected there are, the more the number of patients with complications will be during and after the Covid infection. This is overwhelming for our army of 300 mobile teams, 160 emergency departments and about 40 emergency departments across the country," Dr. Desislava Katelyeva, president of the National Association of Emergency Workers, wrote on Facebook. She noted that many of the emergency medics had fallen ill and others had to work overtime.

'We are at the end of our resources and we refuse to be held accountable for the delayed and inadequate help that cannot meet the needs of our patients. We want our patients to receive timely and equitable emergency medical care, but we do not have a material and human resource to respond to the spike in infections cases", points out Dr. Katelyeva.

She said the blame for delayed response of emergency teams or denied hospitalisations, lies with the government. In her words, they did not introduce adequate anti-epidemic measures and timely mass vaccination of the population.

"What do you call loosening of measures during the peak of a pandemic? Genocide! What are the arguments for the insane decision to loosen anti-epidemic measures? NONE! What are the consequences? Catastrophic! How will people working on the frontline feel? Offended! This is sheer IRRESPONSIBILITY," emergency medics wrote.
