STOYANOV: US ATTACKS CHANGE AGENDA FOR APPLICANTS
Politics | September 18, 2001, Tuesday // 00:00
According to President Stoyanov it is still too early to speak about how Bulgaria will support the possible US actions against the perpetrators of the 11 September terror acts, the Bulgarian National radio announced. This is an issue of coordinating the actions of the EU and NATO member states, the states that are striving towards membership in those organizations, as well as a specific request for help and additional decisions and analyses, the Bulgarian head of state said. Asked whether the basic challenges in the Bulgarian national security concept must be re-examined after what happened in the United States, President Stoyanov said: `There is no doubt about it. The very idea of security must be re-examined and this, I think, applies not only to Bulgaria. Furthermore, this applies not only to national security, but to the entire Bulgarian policy which deals with our national security. I think that this will be discussed at a meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security in a more general and theoretical manner. If you will, this would also redefine the topics of the 5 October meeting of the heads of state of the Vilnius group countries, namely, the countries that aspire towards NATO membership, because all other topics seem anachronistic against the background of what happened a few days ago in the United States.`
