Dear H.E. Ambassador Mr. Stefan Tafrov,
As a representative of your country on the UN Security Council, I encourage you to oppose the reckless rush to war, a war which could have disastrous results for the people and environment of Iraq and for all humanity.
I liken the position of a pre-emptive war to a judge who executes the accused prisoner while the jury is still deliberating. Bulgaria has abolished the death penalty for all crimes. The same sense of justice demands that we not "execute" (or fight a war with) Iraq while
the inspections programme is on-going and still offers significant opportunity for success. Pre-emptive war violates the principles of justice upon which our two countries and the UN are based. At minimum, Bulgaria should join with others to let the inspections programme follow
its complete course.
Bulgaria's support of the resolution to place deadlines on Iraq to be enforced by the force of war is quite troubling. The exposure of the
offering of exaggerated claims by President Bush over Iraq's nuclear program (The Nigerian documents were forged; the aluminum tubes were not
for nuclear purposes) suggest that the US may be exaggerating Iraq's chemical and biological weapons programs. It takes a lot of time for
the inspections programme to uncover the whole truth. Allowing the US to have a hair-line trigger to go to war almost certainly ensures that
war would be unavoidable. That is a reckless path which Bulgaria would be wise to reconsider and prevent.
Please only support resolutions that will support a successful, complete inspections programme. I and many others stand for a sane and just approach for completing the course of UN inspections.
Sincerely,
Chris Fearnley
US Citizen
PS. I love Bulgarian folk dancing. Krivata, Dedo Mille Dedo, Rekka, Vodeno Hora, Pajduska, Tropanka and many others are all wonderful fun!
