The renovated Doctor's Monument in downtown Sofia was officially opened on Friday by US Ambassador James Pardew, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Titov, Sofia Mayor Sofianski and Dian Kavrakov, CEO of Bulgarian realtor A.D.I.S. (Domestic Diplomatic Properties Agency).

Each of them planted a tree as a symbolic start of the second stage of the renovation and improvement of the Doctor's Garden. Nearly one hundred trees will be planted and other landscape renovations will be made this month.

The renovations were realized with donations raised by members of the neighborhood committee, "Friends of Doctor's Garden," a joint initiative of the US embassy, twelve diplomatic missions in the region and many international companies like A.D.I.S., Allied Pickfords, Nestle - Sofia, US Meds and Air Via.

Dian Kavrakov from the committee explained that many citizens and companies donated funds for the renovation of the Monument. "Responsible attitude to the cultural and historical places in Sofia bring useful to the community results," he added.
Over the past several months, the Friends of Doctor's Garden association has made a number of improvements in the appearance and operation of this historic city park. New benches were installed, the Doctor's Monument in the center of the park was repaired and cleaned, and other improvements were made.

Russia's Embassy financed and installed the new lighting, which now illuminates the Doctor's Monument. The US Embassy provided a grant to "Old Sofia" for the repair and cleansing of the archaeological exhibition which is in the park and makes it one of Europe's unique small urban parks.
