Politics | September 16, 2001, Sunday // 00:00

Police detained 45 illegal immigrants from Pakistan on Friday after they were found hiding in a fuel tanker with limited air sources, authorities said, quoted by Associated Press. Police said the immigrants were squeezed into the tanker that only had only two air holes. One person suffered some respiratory problems. Authorities provided no information on whether the immigrants were men or women, but they said there were no children on the tanker, which was stopped 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of Thessaloniki. It was also not clear whether they crossed the border from Turkey or Bulgaria. A Greek man, whose identity was not immediately released, was arrested for smuggling. Greece is routinely targeted by immigrant smugglers as an entry point into the European Union.
