The desegregation of Roma schools began in Vidin in 2000 with 460 minority children. Montana, Pleven, Stara Zagora, Haskovo and Sliven were included in the programme this year. The desegregation program aims to give Roma children an equal start. `The programme for desegregation of Roma schools will involve 680 children this year`, Roumyan Roussinov, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Human Rights Project said. Buses that will take the Roma children from their neighbourhoods were already bought. The teachers will supervise regular attendance and performance and will be in contact with parents. There are more than 100 elementary schools in the Roma residential areas of the big towns. More than 70 per cent of them provide poor education. `Lack of motivation in children and teachers is the main reason for the poor performance of pupils in Roma schools,` Roussinov said.
