Bulgaria's Stand on New Iraq Resolution Still "Unknown"

Bulgaria's stand on the new Iraq resolution will be known after the other Security Council members voice their reaction, Stefan Tafrov, Bulgarian UN ambassador, told Info Radio.

He underlined that Bulgaria attributes great significance to the unity within the Security Council.

In the words of Tafrov Bulgaria is yet to take a final decision on whether to support or not the new Iraq resolution.

The issue must be carefully considered, Tafrov said.

Tafrov pointed out that the draft resolution contains a reminder to Iraq on its engagements to disarm.

He explained that the resolution declares that Iraq does not comply with Resolution 1441, an opinion which Bulgaria has already supported.

The draft resolution on Iraq, which the US, UK and Spain submitted to the Security Council on Monday, is designed to clear the way for military action against Iraq. It deepened the rift within the UN as it was rivalled by a proposal to boost weapons inspections, backed by France, Germany and Russia.

According to reports of BBC so far, "only Bulgaria has joined the three countries who signed the draft in voicing its support".
