Justice Minister Anton Stankov has requested the extradition of Veska Medzhidieva, former governor of liquidated Bulgarian agrarian and industrial bank, from South Africa.

The request was ordered by Sofia City Court at the demand of the Prosecutor's Office. The magistrates insist the extradition on accusation of misappropriating BGN 300 M old levs. The suspect can be sentenced to up to thirty years in prison. The Bulgarian agrarian and industrial bank was liquidated in July, 1995.

Medzhieva, considered one of the key suspects for Bulgaria's financial crash in 1996 and 1997, left Bulgaria in 1996. In August 1997, former chief prosecutor Ivan Tatarchev requested the extradition of Medzhidieva but South Africa refused to fulfill the request for lack of legal cooperation agreement with Bulgaria.
