CABINET AIDS THE RELATIVES OF THE MEDICS IN LIBYA
Politics | September 14, 2001, Friday // 00:00
The government granted BGN 12,000 financial aid to the relatives of the Bulgarian medics who were charged with intentionally infecting Libyan children with HIV. The money will be used for the travel expenses of the relatives for the September 22 hearing in Tripoli. It will be granted from the state budget and will be covered by the Justice Ministry. The Libyan reaction should be observed carefully after the terrorist attack in the States, the information site Intellinews wrote, quoted by Dnevnik Daily. A possible Libyan intervention in the US terrorist attack might make the US position severe towards Libya. In response, Libya may revenge the convicted Bulgarian medics, the news agency commented. The fact that Qaddafi several times accused the United States in infecting children with HIV as part of their aggressive politics will probably be taken in consideration. The news agency also wrote that it was surprising that the Bulgarian Government`s reaction to the tragic US events was very slow. As far as the economy is concerned, the US situation might delay the negotiations with IMF according Intellinews. It is also possible that the government will slow down the drastic economic measures as the zero tax on profit re-investments, for example. The Bulgarian GDP may suffer. That depends on the European countries reactions since 55.5% of the Bulgarian export is to the European Union; only 5.3% is to the US, the news agency also wrote in its analysis.
