At least seven Palestinians - most of them armed - and one Israeli soldier have been killed in a day of intense fighting in the Gaza Strip. Six of the Palestinians were killed and more than 20 were wounded when Israeli tanks with air support moved into the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanoun in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Israelis demolished a number of homes and conducted house-to-house searches in the town after a number of rockets were launched into Israel from Beit Hanoun. Separately, an Israeli soldier was killed by a sniper in the southern Gaza Strip. He was shot in the back near the town of Khan Younis and died soon after, despite emergency medical treatment and evacuation to hospital.
