Average Wages in Bulgaria Crept Up over 2002

The average monthly wages of Bulgarians working under employment contracts in 2002 stood at BGN 272, Bulgaria's National Statistical Institute said.

The lowest wages that averaged BGN 251 was registered in January. The highest level was reached in December when the estimates showed BGN 282 of average remuneration.

Those working in financial intermediation got the highest salaries, which averaged BGN 586. Among well-paid employees were those employed in electricity, gas and water supply who earned BGN 455 on average. The average wages in the extraction industries was BGN 416.

State-financed sector employees earned BGN 291 on average.

The worst paid employees appear to be those in the hotel and restaurant business who got BGN 164 on average.
