Bulgaria: Less than half of the Parents in Bulgaria Talk to their Children about Sex

There is an increase in the number of parents who talk to their children about sexual relations, but those who do so are still less than half. According to data from two studies by the Institute of Social Activities and Practices, made in 2015 and 2018 by Gallup International.

About 80% of Bulgarian children have social networking profiles, and more and more people are aware of the dangers of communications their children have online, the results show. To overcome the risks, the Social Activities and Practices Institute launches a campaign called "Wary parents."

In 2015, most parents thought the appropriate age for children to talk about sexual relations was 10 years, whereas in 2018 they were already of the opinion that this should happen even earlier. There is an increasing number of parents who take into account the dangers of Internet communication, explained Borislava Gitsova from the Institute for Social Activities and Practices.

"Three years ago, only 8% of parents considered it a topic they needed to talk to with children, but in 2018, we detect 39% of them who think that risks on the Internet are very important and they need to talk to the children, "Gitsova said.

The majority are parents who believe that the responsibility for conducting this conversation is theirs, but these issues should also be addressed in schools: "Less than half - 48% of the parents spoke in 2018 with children, at 51%, who did not. "We are seeing a 10% growth compared to 2015, but we realize that half of the parents do not take the time and think the conversation is difficult for them."

To prevent online threats against children, and above all the dangers of online seduction, a campaign called "Wary parents" begins, Mila Tsalova from the Institute for Social Activities and Practices said: "The campaign calls for more vigilance on the part of parents, not to condemning or telling someone that they are not acting properly, to support them to be closer to their children, to remind them that they continue to be children and when they seem to be very grown up. "

More information on the signs that there is such a problem and how to overcome it is posted on the "Wary parents" website.
