Bulgaria: Repair Closes Another One of the Central Streets in Sofia

One more of the streets in downtown Sofia will be closed for repairs. On February 20, Wednesday, the renovation of "Shesti Septemvri" Street from "Aksakov" Str. To "Slavianska" Street starts, the Sofia Municipality announced. On a preliminary schedule, the repair must be completed by April 15, but the time limit may be extended if the weather deteriorates and prevents work.

The renovation of this part of the street is part of the contract for repair of part of the city center, including "Graf Ignatiev" Str. The floorings and the pavements are to be replaced. Their foundations will be strengthened.

First work will be done on the road that will be with granite pavers and the sidewalks will remain free for pedestrians. After that, the pavement and the sidewalks that will be made of concrete paving will be replaced.

During the repair, paid parking spaces in this section of the street will be closed and car traffic will be stopped. The crossing of the streets "Slavyanska" and "Six September" will be open to cars.

There is also a repair of part of the nearby Ivan Shishman Street. It is again part of the renovation of Graf Ignatiev Str. And the adjoining spaces, which is now being worked on the section of the street near the church "St. Sedmochislenici, "and the car traffic there is stopped.

At the same time, the work on replacing the underground infrastructure and the pavements on Ivan Vazov Street, which also crosses "Sixth September", continues. The repairs there started months ago, but were frozen in the winter. At that time, the street in the center of the city looked like a wagon road.

From 14 February, the work being done by Sofiyska Voda was renewed. It works on the stretch between the streets "Ivan Shishman" and "Six September", and then begins the change of the pipes between "September Six" and "GS Rakovski".

The reconstruction of the water supply and sewerage network is expected to be completed by the end of April. After that, however, the repair continues with the laying of the pavements. During the repair, access to cars will be limited and a temporary movement organization will be introduced.

During the entire reconstruction, 460 m of sewerage and 470 m of water mains will be replaced, as well as all adjacent plumbing and sewerage deviations. They have to replace the water pipe, made in 1935, and a street channel from 1901.

The replacement is extremely important not only for the buildings on Ivan Vazov Street, but for the whole territory, locked between the streets "Graf Ignatiev", "Aksakov", "GS Rakovski" and "Vasil Levski" Blvd, explained from the municipality.

After replacing the water supply and sewerage infrastructure, the flooring and sidewalks need to be changed. The idea is for the lanes to be covered with a granite pavement.

The message from the Sofia Municipality reveals that the administration has given up its ideas to change the appearance of the street by making chicanes on the roadway at the expense of increasing the sidewalks. Their goal was to kill the speed at which the cars are moving and, at the same time, to create more pedestrian space.

However, some street residents have opposed these intentions, as it means a drastic reduction in parking space. They also worried that wider pedestrian-facing places would attract people around the clock and make the street too noisy. There were also fears that outdoor dining can also take place in these places.
