Bulgaria: More than Half of the Psychiatric Establisments are in a Critical Condition

An analysis of all psychiatric hospitals, mental health centers and psychiatric wards, including the building stock and equipment, has been made and I have informed the Cabinet of their condition, Health Minister Kiril Ananiev told journalists at the Council of Ministers.

More than 50 percent of psychiatric wards, hospitals and centers are in a truly critical condition, the minister said. There are 12 state psychiatric hospitals, 22 mental health centers and 11 corresponding wards in other hospitals, he said.

We start preparing public procurement for the repair of these hospitals and wards. Apart from repairing psychiatric clinics for at least ten million leva, the state will prioritize training for psychiatrists, Kiril Ananiev said.

Two psychiatric centers - in Sofia and Targovishte - can not be repaired, but they have to be relocated, the minister said.
