Bulgaria: Five Dams in Plovdiv Area Need Urgent Repair

Five dams in the region need urgent repair, a senior expert at the regional administration in Plovdiv told Focus Radio. Two of them, Zlatovrah and Gorni Domlyan, both owned by Napoitelni Sistemi (Irrigating Systems), are now completely empty and able to receive water, whatever the volumes, chief security expert Valeri Baranov explained. The third problematic dam is the one at Golyam Chardak, where there is a slide. The wall there was dug to prevent the collection of water. “Those are the three most dangerous dams in the region,” Baranov said. The others are the dam between Karlovo and Sopot and the one at Kliment, where there are again problems with the overflow channels. Today a special committee will examine them. The State Agency for Metrological and Technical Surveillance is also tasked with monitoring water bodies in the region and its representatives participate in the committees. Every day they report the situation to the regional administration. By order of the prime minister, the problematic reservoirs have to be described and receive prescriptions. Deadlines expire towards the end of this month. That is why a new committee will make on-site inspections, Valeri Baranov said.
