Bulgaria: The EC has Allocated EUR 27 Million to Modernize Bulgaria's Gas Network

Bulgarian gas operator Bulgartransgaz will receive more than 27m euros from the Connecting Europe Facility to modernize its gas transmission network, the coordinating board of the European mechanism has decided. This was announced by the state-owned company, which has already absorbed 1,032 million euros for the preparation of the project for the replacement of depreciated two sections of the North Semester of the existing gas transmission network with a total length of about 81 km, reports Mediapool.

The activities under these projects are envisaged in the second phase of the Bulgartransgaz project for rehabilitation, modernization and extension of the Bulgarian gas transmission system as part of the realization of the idea of building a Balkan gas hub near Varna.

In the first phase of the project, preparing the gas hub, they were reconstructed for 104 million Euro compressor stations Petrich, Lozenets and Ihtiman. Built for 23 million euros was also the so-called gas loop, representing a 20-kilometer section from Lozenets to Nedyalsko, allowing the transit flow on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline to go not only from Bulgaria to Turkey but also in the opposite direction and to transport Russian gas on the planned Turkish gas pipeline.

The replacement of the route on two stretches will be financed with the current European funds - from 58 km to 23 km. The first one is Beglej - Dermantsi - Batultsi - Kalugerovo. This section provides for the transport of natural gas imported from Romania's border and is directly connected to the only natural gas storage facility in Chiren. The route is also an important part of the plans for using the already established gas connection of our country with Romania and the future interconnector with Serbia, whose construction is part of the third phase of the project for the overall rehabilitation of the 40-year old gas network. The second section of the Northern Hemicycle has a length of 23 km and is between Valchi Dol and Preselka.
