16th Century Turkish Barracks Open to Archaeology Fans in Sofia

Remains from Turkish barracks from 16th century were opened to visitors on Tuesday in downtown Sofia after restoration. In the barracks at Paris street near Alexander Nevsky cathedral, revolutionaries and rebels were held under arrest in 1876. National hero Vassil Levski left for the gallows from the nearby artillery barrack.

Priests from "St. Sofia" basilica held a service at the restored barracks in memory of Levski.

The restoration was realized by Sofia municipality, Sofia Historical Museum and private sponsors.
