BULGARIAN REACTION TO THE TERRORIST ATTACKS
September 13, 2001, Thursday // 00:00
All Bulgarian departments, organizations, the Orthodox Church and the public sent letters, declarations and statements that condemn the series of attacks in the US. In a message to US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolai Svinarov wrote: `I condemn all forms of terrorism and I am sure that the whole Bulgarian nation shares this position. Please accept my deepest sympathies for the bereaved families.` The National Assembly Chairman sent a message to the speaker of the US House of Representatives Dennis Hastert. He denounced `the barbarous terrorist acts` saying that no political or moral cause justify the taking of innocent. Sofia Mayor Stefan Sofiyanski sent a letter of condolences to the mayors of Washington Anthony Williams and of New York Rudolf Giuliani. Environment Minister Dolores Arsenieva sent a message to the chief of the Washington-based US Environmental Protection Agency and to Richard Miles, US Ambassador to Bulgaria. Leaders of the United Democratic Forces met with US Ambassador Miles to express their solidarity and sympathy. Former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov arrived at the US Embassy with a bunch of white daisies. He talked with the Ambassador for 20 minutes but refused to speak to the press after that.
