Bulgarians Propose Many Toasts to Honor St Trifon

As lovers celebrate St Valentine's Day, many Bulgarians insist February 14 should be reserved for a traditional Bulgarian celebration - the feast of St Trifon "Zarezan," the patron of vinegrowing.

The celebration brings a cunning smile to the faces of many Bulgarians as it is usually honored with a lot of toasts. Those who love wine in Bulgaria regard St Trifon's Day as a very special occasion to celebrate life.

Though impatiently awaited by wine lovers, February 14 is not the right day to honor St Trifon. This date might have been the saint's feast for centuries but since the Bulgarian Orthodox Church have turned to the reformed Julian calendar thirty-five years ago, it is officially marked on February 1.

Many Bulgarian towns and villages with vinegrowing traditions already marked Trifon Zarezan. Fourteen days ago, vinegrowers pruned the vines and sprinkled them with wine for a good harvest. Ritual songs and dances were performed with many wishes for a plentiful harvest. In some villages, a Vine King was chosen.
