Bulgaria Plans Holocaust Day March 10

Society | February 13, 2003, Thursday // 00:00

The Council of Ministers is expected to set today March 10th as the Day of the Holocaust Victims in Bulgaria.

The salvation of Bulgarian Jews from the nazi death camps will be commemorated with a lot of splendor this year. On that day in 1943, the country's leaders halted the implementation of a governmental decision dispatching the first groups of Bulgarian Jews to fascist death camps. This unique act of defiance that came from a loyal ally of nazi Germany, as Bulgaria was, will be commemorated by a string of events including an international historical forum and a Holocaust lectures in all Bulgarian schools. Central Bank will also mark the anniversary issuing a jubilee coin.

Following the example of many European countries, a special committee chaired by Bulgaria's President Parvanov has started preparations for the Day.

Hillary Clinton and Henry Kissinger are invited by the Jewish organization Shalom on the occasion of the 60th anniversary since the saving of the Bulgarian Jews. The visit kicks off on March 8th from Kyustendil. The next day the Hillary Clinton and Henry Kissinger will visit Plovdiv.
