Bulgaria's First Cask-Rolling Contest Gets Ovation

Eight Bulgarians and five Frenchmen impressed the visitors of the Vinaria international wine exhibition in Plovdiv with a cask-rolling contest. They went for 200 m sprint on Saturday. Such contest takes place for the first time in Bulgaria.

The winner is Bulgarian Kostadin Petrov who rolled to the final point 50kg cask for 49.23 s. The best French participant is 43-year old Bruno Fongent who has been in this unusual sport since 1982.

Best scorer Petrov was presented with a trip to French town of Cognac to take part in the annual cask-rolling contest in September.

The audience gave much ovation to the oldest contester - 67-year old Bulgarian Georgi Vangelov - for his courage to take part in the exhausting sprint.

The Frenchmen took the breath of the viewers as they performed special cask-rolling spectacle after the contest.

Vinaria 2003, international exhibition for vine-growing and wine-making, opened on February 5 in Bulgaria's second city Plovdiv. It marked a record-high number of participants - a total of 317 Bulgarian and foreign companies from 23 countries, primarily Italy, France, Germany.
