Russian Theatre Reopens after Hostage Tragedy

The Moscow theatre, which was the scene of a disastrous hostage taking last year, officially reopens today. The press got a sneak preview of the Nord-Ost musical performed in the Dubrovka theatre on Friday, amid tight security. On 23 October 2002, around 40 Chechen rebels seized the building, holding more than 700 hundred actors and spectators hostage for three days. The crisis ended tragically, after Russian special forces stormed the theatre using gas. All the chechen rebels were killed, along with nearly 130 hostages. The city's government has given around 2.5 million euro to restore the theatre, as most of the set and costumes were damaged.
