Ukrainian Woman Detained in Sunny Beach After Attempted Bribery of Police Officers
Bulgarian authorities found themselves grappling with a peculiar case involving a 60-year-old Ukrainian woman
Senior state officials and at least one minister and one deputy prime minister are involved in a corruption scheme for acquiring Bulgarian citizenship. More than 114 people wanted by Interpol received Bulgarian passports and lawyers prepared the application documents for amounts between 500 and 3000 euros.
This is argued in an investigation by the French newspaper "Nouvel Observatory", announced by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms in parliament.
The French edition quotes former Director of Bulgarian Citizenship at the Ministry of Justice Katya Mateva, dismissed from her position, in her words, after reports of irregularities. Since then she has been harassed and threatened, including her husband being fired if she is not silent. "This traffic is hidden at the highest level in the state," Mateva says, quoted by the magazine. She has sent signals of the illegal scheme to the Chief Prosecutor, to intelligence bosses and even to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov. No one reacted.
According to the leader of "Ataka" party Volen Siderov, the assertions of the MRF are common fairy tales. "More specific data is needed to reach a committee of inquiry," he said.
