Bulgaria: The Summer Season in Bulgaria Begins with Traffic Congestion

This year's summer season in Bulgaria begins with traffic congestion and blockades on the roads. The toughest situation will be traditionally on the Hemus highway, which will have restrictions all summer. By the middle of June, a repair will take place some 20 kilometers from the Trakia highway after Plovdiv. Then, in the beginning of the autumn, the tunnel Trayanovi vrata on the Trakia highway will be repaired. In the course of a month, it will also be difficult to move through the Kulata border crossing because of a Greek repair. The traffic on the Lyulin highway is still limited due to the landslides there. Thus, in practice, all the main routes that lead from Sofia to the sea are currently blocked.

On the Hemus highway the restrictions will continue throughout the summer. In addition to the repairs of the pipes in the direction of Sofia to the Echemiska and Vitinya tunnels, urgent repairs are also required on some of the bridges - for example at 36 km. This was announced by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Nikolay Nankov during his visit to Shumen yesterday. "The bridge facility is in a tragic state and needs repair," said Nankov. .

Repairing the Hemus highway on the territory of the Shumen district in the direction of Varna also creates a problem for the drivers. Nankov promised repairs would finish by June 22 at the latest. Construction of the new section of Hemus from Belokopitovo to Buhovtsi road junction will not fit into the summer repairs and will start in September.

At the beginning of the holiday season, repairs took place on the section of Trakia highway, between 160 and 140 km, where also large congestion occurred. Work there is also expected to end by mid-June. "These are 22 km full rehabilitation of the motorway in both directions of the traffic," said Nankov and urged the drivers to be patient.

The nightmare for drivers, however, seems to be lasting. There is also a repair of the Trayanovi Vrata tunnel on the Trakia highway. It is likely to start in the autumn. The order for repair of the tunnels "Topli Dol" and "Praveshki hane" of "Hemus" has already been announced.

According to a ranking of the World Economic Forum last year, Bulgaria ranks 93rd in the quality of roads among 137 countries. Immediately before us are countries such as Tanzania, Algeria and Mali. The same rating as Bulgaria is Uganda and Vietnam. According to the report, the best quality roads are in the United Arab Emirates, followed by Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Japan. France, Austria and the United States are among the top 10, while Germany is only 15th on the road infrastructure ranking.
