Bulgaria: Bulgarian Truck Carriers will Protest in Brussels

Today Bulgarian truck carriers will protest in Brussels against the social part of the Mobility Package 1, which will be voted in the European Parliament, said Vasil Pironkov, chairman of the National Association of Bus Carriers, who also has a heavy truck company, Darik reported.

Among the problematic, according to businesses in Bulgaria, suggestions are the obligation for drivers to go to their homes every three weeks and the prohibition to stay in their trucks. Something that is also disputed is the period after which drivers should receive overtime pay with the size of the one in the country through which they travel.

If adopted, the new rules will make Bulgarian transport companies uncompetitive and will throw them out of the European market, carriers are categorical.

Truck drivers who are near the Belgian capital, even in France and the Netherlands, will join the protest, Vasil Pironkov said. He added that the protest is legal and heavy trucks will participate, his expectations are that the level of dissatisfaction will be the same as in Sofia on 17 May.

At this stage there is no official decision on where the protest will take place, Pironkov commented.

He said his personal forecast was that unfavorable proposals for the Bulgarian transport business will be accepted. Still, the industry hopes that the Bulgarian proposals, which have united both employers and trade unions, have a chance.
